Annunciation after Lippi/Altarpiece XVI

Annunciation after Lippi/Altarpiece XVI

Lippi’s important altarpiece most uniquely addresses the “how” of the Annunciation. The dove shoots out a beam of light that cuts a hole in Mary’s garment at the level of her womb…attesting to the physical reality of the Incarnation. Its shape suggest that it might have been the lunette for a large altarpiece.
