Embellished Cross

after Giotto

Many of the medieval crosses that hung in the churches of Italy were extravagantly ornamented, especially around the perimeter.

This gilded cross is fashioned after one by Giotto that was created for the Dominican Church of the Florentine in the late 13th century. For the first time the crucified Christ is depicted as a man with an overbearing sense of return of natural human figure, who feel the full weight of the great physical body and the human suffering of man-God.
