A mound of old rusted nails set in a book-box lined with precious gold, seems an unlikely combination, setting in place vivid contrasts; polished and tarnished, good and evil, eternal and that which decays.
Another obvious connection references the container from which the soldiers pulled the spikes to nail Jesus to the cross.
